Ask yourself what stress is and you will certainly come up with a laundry list of ideas. Ask your best friend the same question and you are likely to get different answers. Ask ten people that question and undoubtedly you will have ten different answers. As you can see, stress is different to every person. What one person considers stressful may not be stressful at all to another person. There are certainly different definitions of stress depending on who you ask.

There is, of course, a text book answer to what is stress. By definition, stress is tension, or in other words is it an emotional strain or mental state that can cause degrees of difficulty. You may find that you face small stresses every day. What should you wear to work? Did you remember to feed the dog? Does your child have lunch money? You may also have major stresses in your life. Will I overcome this illness? Can I pay the house payment this month? Will the car make it another few weeks? These are all stresses and they can certainly cause strain in your life.

Get some coping skills for your stress: When you feel stress, you will find ways to cope. Again, the way you cope with your stresses in life may not be the way another person copes. Some people may deal with stress quite well just by relaxing a little bit. You may be different. You may need to take more time to get over the stress you feel.

You may need to talk to your friend or family member about your feelings. You may also need to take a walk around the block, or pop a funny movie in the DVD player. When you are stressed, then you need to take the time to find what works for you to feel better.

Learning to deal with your stress: There are many ways you can learn to deal with your stress. Many health care professionals recommended first that you take things off of your to-do list. When you are stressed you may have too many things to keep up with. You need to take a hard look at what you have on your calendar. Are there things that you can eliminate? Are there jobs and tasks that you can delegate to others? Once you take things off of your list, then you will feel less stress and this will make you feel much better.

Stress certainly happens to the best of us. You have to learn how to deal with the stresses that you feel. Definitions are not always accurate when you are talking about stress. Again, what you think may be stress may not be what others think. Now that you understand a little more about stress and what it is, you can certainly work to eliminate it from your life. Stress does not have to get the best of you. Learn what you can do to work hard on these feelings that you have.
