During the winter months when we tend to crank the indoor heating, humidity levels are on average lower, and cold, blustery air is the norm once we step outside, it’s not uncommon to suffer from persistently dry, scratchy, irritated eyes (not to be confused with dry eye syndrome). In addition, winter weather seems to coincide with cold and flu season. To combat symptoms, many of us turn to OTC medications such as antihistamines and nasal decongestants, which can exacerbate dry eyes.
