Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. It is commonly used to imply disorders that are caused due to acute bacterial infection and chronic pain syndromes. Characterized by pain in the general region between the anus and the genital organs, it is often accompanied by irregular urination, impotence, painful ejaculation and low back pain. Severe conditions of prostatitis can produce chills and fever.
Acute bacterial prostatitis is differentiated from other categories of prostatitis on the basis of the presence of white blood cells in the prostatic fluids and the nature of symptoms. It is one of the four categories of prostatitis that is technically considered as a sub-type of a urinary tract infection. Reflux of infected urine and urethral infection during sexual intercourse are considered to be the main cause behind acute prostatitis.
Patients suffering from prostatitis present such varied and non-specific symptoms that it is difficult to diagnose it with certainty unless prostate specific urine tests are performed. Some of the major symptoms include muscular pain, pain during urination and urinary frequency along with the other symptoms of prostatitis. Clinical indications include a tender, warm, swollen, firm and irregular prostate.
There is no specific test to diagnose acute bacterial prostatitis. In the early stages, prostate medicine that is administered for the condition is a selection of antibiotics based on experience rather than theory. It is difficult for an antibiotic to cross the blood-prostate barrier but many patients have known to respond favorably to them. It is believed that the inflammation caused by the condition may have a role to play in easy penetration. It is only after a urine culture is performed to ascertain susceptibilities to various pathogens that a specific antibiotic can be prescribed.
Prostatitis remains a poorly studied disorder. The presence of hidden infection is high and often physicians resort to therapeutic antibiotic trials. If there is an improvement in the symptoms the therapy is continued for three to four weeks, maybe more till the symptoms vanish completely.
A vast majority of males start facing prostate problems once they cross the age of forty. Prostate can be a cause of extreme frustration to men due to the urinary and sexual problems associated with it. Apart from different forms of acute and chronic prostatitis, prostate enlargement is another condition that males have to combat with in their middle age.
It is ironical that even in the present age of free flow of information and increased levels of health awareness, men tend to ignore preventive measures that can be adopted to ensure a healthy prostate. A prostate friendly, healthy and balanced diet is a very effective natural method of keeping your prostate in perfect condition. Recourse to alternative remedies and herbs for prostate enlargement can also play a crucial role in prevention and treatment of prostate related problems.
