Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic arthritic condition that is characterized by inflammation of the joints with the simultaneous exhibition of psoriasis on the stand. The diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis is dependent upon the patient also having the condition of psoriasis.
Ten percent of patients who suffer from, or experienced psoriasis will also go on to develop psoriatic arthritis. The disease is chronic and destructive, sometimes leading to complete joint destruction which requires joint replacement.
Psoriasis is a skin disorder that is distinguished by a patchy raised red area of skin that are scaly and do not respond to standard moisturizer. Only 2% of the Caucasian population in the United States is currently affected by psoriasis.
Psoriasis will affect children and adults equally. When children are affected they have a higher chance of developing asthma later in life. As these patients aged they may also develop psoriatic arthritis in their 40s and 50s.
Psoriasis will usually affect the elbows, knees, scalp, naval and the area around the genital region. Patients find that the scaly areas are intensely embarrassing and they often wear clothing to hide their illness. Individuals may forgo a trip to the beach or may change their social plans based on whether or not their illness is flaring.
Individuals who develop psoriatic arthritis will have developed Psoriasis first. When the arthritis appears before the psoriasis (in approximately 15% of the cases) it can make the diagnoses and very difficult. In some cases, the arthritis has appeared as much as three years before the onset of the skin disease.
At this time researchers have not found a tendency for the disease to a car in men or women, but both are affected equally. The defining characteristics appear to be the presence of the skin condition, a compromised immune system and the potential for the presence of certain genetic markers.
This particular arthritic condition is a systemic rheumatic disease that not only attacks the joints but also affects other tissues in the body including the eyes, heart, kidneys, lungs and skin. Although the causes are not completely understood there have been some genetic markers found in approximately 50% of the population who suffer from psoriatic arthritis.
Researchers theorize that the cause of the disease can be found in the immune system, exposure to environmental factors and genetic predisposition. Although it isn’t conclusive, the researchers draw from a variety of factors to profile typical patients with psoriatic arthritis.
