Eczema, or atopic dermatitis (AD), is a common inflammatory condition of the skin that begins in infancy and may continue into adulthood. It is believed to be linked to delayed immunity development. Previous studies suggest that infants with eczema commonly develop asthma during childhood.
Now research reports that synbiotics may relieve eczema and prevent asthma symptoms in children. Synbiotics are a mix of probiotic bacteria and prebiotic fibers.
Probiotics such as acidophilus and bacillus are beneficial bacteria found in the gut (intestines). Prebiotics like galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides g also promote beneficial gut bacteria. The placebo-controlled study, published in the journal Allergy , investigated the effects of synbiotics from Danone Laboratories on eczema and asthma in children.
Researchers from Emma Children’s Hospital in Amsterdam, Netherlands, administered daily an infant formula with or without Bifidobacterium breve M-16V and GOS/FOS mix to 90 infants under seven months old, for 12 weeks
