An article just published in the Lancet suggests that calcium supplementation with or without Vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of bone fracture in people aged over 50 by 12%.
Hmmm…if the results showed this as an average and included calcium on its own then the benefits from a ‘proper’ calcium supplement would be much higher!
For example…it is well known the absorption of calcium is nowhere near as good if it does not have Vitamin D present, so the average result would have been lowered if it factored in those Supplements that did not have Vitamin D.
Then, there is the issue of magnesium which should be present in a calcium supplement…this will help further. How about Boron? Is has been proved conclusively that boron is essential as a co-factor to enable the bones to take up calcium! But…boron is not the only co-factor. Strontium is an important co-factor in enabling better calcium absorption. And…we mustn’t forget about Vitamin K2 which is also essential for helping the calcium do its job.
