Colon health and parkinsons
Image via WikipediaParkinson’s disease is a degenerative disease that attacks the central nervous system. Its classified as a movement disorder because the major symptoms involve the motor system that controls movement.

Although Parkinsons disease is progressive and disabling over time it is also a slowly progressive disorder for which there are several medication protocols that have been developed to help slow the progress and improve the function of those who suffer from this disease.

Parkinson’s disease usually begins around age 60 but there is also a population of people with early onset of the disease. It is more common in women than in men and often starts on one side of the body and then progresses to affecting both sides of the body.

The affect on the muscular control of the body on the sufferer is on the striated muscles of the body and don”t often cause problems with the smooth muscle that control the digestive system in the body. However, those with Parkinson’s Disease also have issues with their colons at the same rate as those who don’t have Parkinson’s Disease.

Unfortunately having one illnesses doesn’t negate the development of another.

Recent research by Harvard University has found an interesting correlation between coffee drinkers and the development of Parkinson’s Disease and colon cancer. Researchers and physicians have long argued the question of whether caffeine and coffee have beneficial or negative health effects on the drinker.

The researchers at Harvard come down on the side of beneficial effects, at least when it comes to Parkinsons Disease and colon cancer. And it appears that more is better. After analyzing the data on 126,000 people over 18 years they concluded that the healthful benefits of caffeine outweighed the harm.

There have been at least six studies that indicate those who drink coffee on a regular basis are 80% less likely to develop Parkinsons disease and drinking at least 2 cups a day translates to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer.

These are only numbers and shouldn’t be used to make decisions about the use of caffeine to reduce the risk of developing Parkinsons or colon cancer since there are also negative effects to caffeine. And, there are those who will make up the number of people who do contract Parkinson’s or colon cancer even if they drink the requisite number of cups of coffee per day.

Instead, an individual may consider improving their nutritional intake of vitamins and minerals in their raw state or by using top quality vitamins to make up the difference in their diet. Diet and exercise also have an effect on the colon health of an individual.

As a person with Parkinsons Disease progresses to a point where movement and walking is difficult they will also find that their ability to have a bowel movement without difficulty will increase. Our digestive system is dependent upon exercise to keep it moving. As the movement of walking becomes almost impossible a person with Parkinson’s Disease will need to have a bowel program designed to meet their needs.

If you have Parkinsons, or you know someone who does, speak with your physician about the need for bowel care as the disease progresses and begin to make changes to your diet today that will have a beneficial effect as you grow older.
