It’s that time of the year when cases of illness, such as strep throat, begin to show up more often. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria in Group A streptococcus bacterium. When someone gets this nasty infection their throat swells and becomes very irritated. The result is a very sore throat and it can happen almost overnight.
The symptoms can be anywhere from minor to severe. This is because there are actually many different strains of the bacterium that causes it.
If you think that you have contracted it then you should see a doctor soon because not taking care of it can lead to serious complications. Some of the toxins can actually cause damage to the kidneys and heart or lead to other things like tonsillitis, scarlet fever, ear infection or even pneumonia.
These infections are much more common late in the fall all the way into early spring. They make the cold and flu season that much more miserable. Children and teenagers are at a higher risk for contracting it because their immune systems have not built up the necessary antibodies to combat it.
Children who have strep throat often complain about soreness in the throat, an upset stomach and a rash that often shows up underneath the arms. Adults have a slightly different set of symptoms with a sore throat, heightened fever and swollen glands. The infection usually lasts anywhere from 2 to 5 days.
When you arrive at the doctor the tests will include a physical exam, close look at the symptoms and lab testing. They will visually examine your throat and tonsils to see if they are swollen, red, streaked white or if pus is visible.
A throat culture is a very common test where a swab is brushed against the back of the throat in order to collect secretions. The sample is then cultured in a lab for twenty four to forty eight hours and checked for the streptococcal bacteria.
A more modern test is the rapid antigen test where the swabbing is done in much the same way as a throat culture. This test has a waiting period of fifteen minutes instead of a day or two. This test isn’t as accurate as a throat culture so many doctors will still do a throat culture if the rapid antigen test happens to show up negative.
You can supplement your doctors treatment plan with herbs for better results. Chamomile can be used to help lower the fever and helps to knock out some of the pain in the throat. Garlic is also an excellent choice for when you get sick with strep throat or any other illness, for that matter. It is an excellent antibiotic!
