Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological brain disorder and thought to be the most common form of dementia. Treatment is readily available and although not a cure it can lessen the symptoms thereby relieving the Alzheimers patient of their symptoms and thereby lessening the strain on that of the caregiver. The most noted form of treatment is that of drug, as well as non-drug therapy.

One of the most important parts of non-drug Alzheimers treatments involves the understanding of the caregiver that the person isn’t acting this way intentionally.

Because some of the things that increase the risk of Alzheimer’s also affects the behavior of the person pre-morbidly, such as depression, it may be difficult to separate any anger or frustration with previous behavior patterns what is occurring today.

Another non-drug type of Alzheimers treatments is to help the person who is suffering from Alzheimer’s to accommodate to their situation and environment. One of the things that people with this condition find difficult is adjusting to new situations and loud noises. By adapting the environment to fit the patient both the caregiver and the patient will have an easier time by providing security to the patient.

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s are usually divided into two separate categories Behavioral or Psychiatric and Cognitive. The Behavioral and Psychiatric symptoms affect the way that the person acts and feels while the Cognitive symptoms play a role in thought processes, memory, judgment and planning.

Drug approaches to the Alzheimers treatments are aimed at the biochemical changes that are happening in the brain of the sufferer and not at changing the behaviors. One such treatment is the use of cholinesterase inhibitors such as Galantamine (Razadyne) and Rivastigmine (Exelon). These are used in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s while a third medication Donepezil (Aricept) is used in all stages.

These cholinesterase inhibitors work by blocking the prevention of acetylcholine breakdown. Acetylcholine is a chemical component of the brain that aids in memory and learning activities. By using cholinesterase inhibitors the amount of acetylcholine remains high which helps the person with Alzheimer’s to continue to communicate effectively.

Another medication, Memantine (Namenda) is used to help control glutamate, another chemical in the brain that works with memory and learning. Glutamate is broken down quickly in patients with Alzheimers which inhibits their ability to learn and communicate well.

As with all medications there are side effects. Some side effects that patients can experience are nausea, vomiting, frequent bowel movements, decreased appetite, vertigo, headache and dizziness. These drugs also have interactions with other medications that the person maybe taking. Always inform both the doctor and pharmacist of all medications, both prescription and over the counter, when any new medication is added to the regimen. This will help to determine drug interactions before they happen or recognize them when they do occur.

With most of these medications the doctor will most likely prescribe a dose that is low and move the dosage up until the patient is tolerating it comfortably and the medication is providing the support that is expected.

Using a non-drug and drug Alzheimers treatment plan will help to give the person with Alzheimers the best possible chance of enjoying their remaining years and decreasing the amount of emotional and physical stress on the caregivers. Alzheimers disease is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining on not only the patient, but the caregiver, but finding the best possible treatment when dealing with this disease can help to give both the patient and its caregiver some necessary relief.
