After the acute phase of tendonitis is over and healing has started there are other therapies, follow-up and prevention that needs to be done in order to keep the tendon healthy and to prevent tendonitis from reoccurring.
Your doctor may order extracorporeal shock wave therapy if you have calcific tendonitis (calcium deposits). This therapy is currently still being studied for its effectiveness.
During physical therapy ultrasound therapy may be used as it helps to loosen up the joint and promote greater range of motion during therapy.
Your doctor may recommend that you follow-up with other specialists and physical therapists in order to maintain tendon function.
In order to prevent tendonitis from occurring again you should learn proper technique during sports participation or when doing occupational activities that may put stress on your joints. Remember to warm-up and cool-down and be determined not to overuse when participating in exercise programs or sports training. It is also important to be aware of repetitive motion in work and sports and how you can avoid injury. You should immediately stop any activity as soon as you notice pain.
When you use the treatment prescribed, follow doctor medication and therapy orders and be patient enough to allow adequate rest opportunity you can avoid further problems.
Be careful to use proper technique during exercising, and participate in muscle strengthening exercises.
If you experience chronic inflammation you may need surgical decompression.
It is important to understand the reason for resting the joint when you have tendonitis. Too many athletes want to rush back into the activity that caused the tendonitis. This can cause further injury and a longer recovery period. Rest is vital to the healing process and must be of an adequate length of time (3 weeks for initial healing and 6 weeks for complete healing).
It is important to understand how the tendonitis occurred in the first place because knowing if you overused, or had repetitive motion can allow you to know what to be wary of in the future to prevent tendonitis from happening again.
It is critical to know the right way to perform on the field and while exercising so technique and correct posture is vital when you are trying to prevent future tendonitis. It is also good to be sure that you have the right equipment including the right shoes in order to prevent re-injury.
