The hippocampus, an area in the brain for memory and learning, typically shrinks with increasing age, Most oder adults experience shrinking of the hippocampus, increasing the risk for dementia. Regular exercise is known to promote brain health and function. Now research reports that regular walking improved memory and increased hippocampus size in seniors. The study, published in PNAS , examined the effects of moderate walking on memory and hippocampus size in older adults. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh assigned 120 sedentary older adults without dementia to either receive an exercise regimen of brisk walking or stretching and toning for 40 minutes a day, three days a week, for one year. MRI brain scans and spatial memory tests were obtained from the participants. The researchers found that the walking group had a 2 percent increase in volume in the hippocampus region, while the stretching group had a1 percent decrease in volume.
