Alzheimer’s disease is a disease receiving much attention by the popular media. Indeed, it is a devastating illness that impacts entire families. What we do know is that there are genetic factors and modifiable lifestyle and dietary factors that influence a person’s chance of developing this cognitive disorder.
A study published in European Journal of Internal Medicine (2004;15:381-386) suggests an infection may also play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. In a small controlled study, chronic infection with the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori was assessed in three groups of subjects:
1) those with Alzheimer’s disease,
2) vascular disease or,
3) matched control.
