Cardiovascular Health: Tips for Preventing a Stroke | Natural Holistic Health Blog

A stroke occurs within the cardiovascular system and occurs when blood is blocked from a certain part of the brain. This can either be caused by a blockage in a blood vessel or some type of clot.

Oxygen is then unable to reach the brain and damage starts happening almost immediately. Strokes do not always look the same.

The symptoms are different depending on what type it is or which part of the brain is affected. Some cause widespread damage while others only affect a small part of the brain.

When you go to the doctor or hospital they will take a close look at your physical symptoms and medical history. You are also likely to receive a neurological exam. The type of testing you undergo is likely to include blood testing and CT scans. These will reveal what part of the brain is damaged and how severe the stroke is.

It can be hard for the person having a stroke to recognize a problem so family members should be on the lookout for signs and symptoms. Some of the things to be on the lookout for are: sudden numbness (often only on one side of the body), drooling, trouble speaking, nausea, trouble understanding things, purging, blurry vision, confusion, blindness (in one or both eyes), sudden personality changes, double vision, severe headache, difficulty standing or difficulty walking.

There are two main types of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic, which are each treated differently by a doctor. For the first type a treatment plan aims at removing the blockage and returning blood supply to the affected part of the brain. The latter is accomplished by preventing further bleeding or rupturing in the brain.

Drugs are often prescribed and aspirin can be bought over the counter as ways to counter clotting blood. Keep in mind that any of these commercial medicines can have potentially harmful side effects.

Preventing a stroke in the first place is a very wise choice. People are turning toward herbal and homeopathic remedies as a preventative measure.

  • Hawthorn is very good for your cardiovascular health.

None of these herbal or homeopathic remedies are meant to replace the advice of a doctor. Using them gives you an advantage in battling the possible occurrence of a stroke and is especially wise if you have a family history of strokes.
